What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of three parts:
- Implant – The artificial, titanium tooth root that is seated within the jawbone.
- Abutment – The metal connector piece that attaches the restoration to the implant post.
- Restoration – The crown, bridge, or denture that is secured on top of the implant and abutment.
Their versatility makes them a great solution for anyone who is missing one or more teeth, and their lifelike appearance makes it nearly impossible for people to be able to tell the difference between real and artificial teeth.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process
Unlike with dentures and dental bridges, getting dental implants takes a little bit longer to restore your smile. The good news, however, is that most patients agree it’s well worth the wait. At Rosen Dental, we’re proud to complete your entire dental implant treatment right here in our office instead of referring you to an outside specialist. Ultimately, while every patient’s treatment will look slightly different, each is centered around four main steps: the consultation, surgery, osteointegration, and of course the delivery of your final restoration and beautiful new smile.
If you’re curious about how dental implants work near Chicago, here’s a closer look at how the magic happens!
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
At your consultation, Dr. Rosen will review your oral health and medical history to determine you’re a good candidate for dental implants. If necessary, he will work with you to complete preliminary treatments like gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, and bone grafting. Then, you’ll be free to move on to planning the rest of your dental implant treatment. We’ll even walk you through step-by-step what you can expect, including the timeline and total cost.
Dental Implant Surgery
At Rosen Dental, we proudly place dental implants in-house. This means you don’t need to drive around from office to office, file multiple claims, and pay multiple doctors. You’ll have the comfort of already knowing and trusting your dental team, which can help make surgery a lot less stressful.
When you arrive at your dental implant surgery, Dr. Rosen will first numb the area receiving the dental implants. Then, he’ll make an incision in your gums, place the dental implant posts in your jawbone, close the gums, and place protective caps over the posts.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement
Once the surgery is completed, it’s time for the osseointegration stage. This is where your new dental implants fuse with your jawbone. Typically, this takes three to six months; however, it could take longer or shorter depending on your individual mouth.
Once the osseointegration is complete, you’ll return to see Dr. Rosen to get your abutments placed on top of the implant posts. This requires another small surgery. As you heal from the abutment surgery over the next few weeks, your final restoration(s) will be crafted from impressions taken of your mouth.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations
Finally, you’ll return once again to Rosen Dental to have your restoration(s) placed. This could be in the form of a single crown, a bridge, or an implant denture, depending on how many teeth you’re replacing. Once secured, Dr. Rosen will check to see if your bite is comfortable, and if all is well, you’ll be ready to leave and show off your newly rebuilt smile!

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants…
- Act like natural teeth, allowing you to eat all the foods you love and be free of any dietary restrictions.
- Have a long lifespan of at least 30 years. Some cases indicate they can remain in place for a lifetime, but you must commit to taking care of them if you want to avoid possible replacement in the future.
- Are crafted to look completely natural, so you can expect your artificial teeth to mimic your real ones in look, size, and shape.
- Promote improved oral health by reducing the risk of dental drift – the shifting of teeth over time – and jawbone resorption – the depletion of the underlying bone that occurs following tooth loss.
- Are easy to maintain, requiring no special products. All you need is daily brushing/flossing along with routine dental checkups at least twice a year.
